Haiti is an island state on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. Haiti is located in the western part of the island and the neighboring Dominican Republic in the eastern part.
The Dufort family started their activities in the coffee business more than a century ago. The family was one of the largest coffee exporters in Haiti. In 1970, they began roasting their own coffee and today operate the largest coffee roasting plant in Haiti. Over the years, they have worked, learned and grown with farmers and cooperatives. The commitment to quality helped raise awareness of the value of the fruit.
With the same philosophy, the Dufort family started a new venture with cocoa farmers in 2014. They, too, need to better recognize the value of their product, as well as the appreciation of the end consumer. Under the name "Produits des Iles SA (PISA)," they set up a production facility in northern Haiti, the center of cocoa cultivation. Located in the middle of the five main regions, it takes up to three hours by car to reach the farthest plantation.
The network now consists of more than 1,500 organic farmers, with the average plantation size being relatively small and the largest plantation only one hectare. PISA supports the farmers in all matters, whether cultivation or new equipment, and employees drive to the plantations six days a week to buy the fresh cocoa beans. In a short time, PISA was able to increase the average yield and more than double the income of the cocoa farmers.
